Objective:
Students will design and equip a facility in which to begin their own business. Lesson includes scale drawing of facility, ordering furniture/equipment and ordering supplies.
Instructional Plan:
The lesson consists of three main parts, which may be spread over a period of several weeks:
- Part One:refresher topics on measuring, percents, what a scale drawing is, ratios, cost per unit, area, volume and perimeter
- Part Two:measuring and designing the scale drawing and putting the finished copy on grid paper with labels and measurements shown
- Part Three:using catalogs and other resources to order furnishings, equipment and supplies, including figuring out discounts, “best buy” per unit volume, sales tax, shipping and handling charges, what a budget is and how to stay within it.
Assessment:
- Scale drawing a rubric is drawn up which awards points in 3 different categories: overall design, intelligent use of space, completeness and neatness and accuracy
- Ordering equipment/furnishings: rubric includes points for staying within budget, correctly calculating tax, shipping etc. and completeness of order
- Ordering Supplies (much like the rubric for ordering equipment)
