Instructional Plan:
The lesson consists of three main parts, which may be spread over a period of several weeks:

  • Part One:refresher topics on measuring, percents, what a scale drawing is, ratios, cost per unit, area, volume and perimeter
  • Part Two:measuring and designing the scale drawing and putting the finished copy on grid paper with labels and measurements shown
  • Part Three:using catalogs and other resources to order furnishings, equipment and supplies, including figuring out discounts, “best buy” per unit volume, sales tax, shipping and handling charges, what a budget is and how to stay within it.

Assessment:

  • Scale drawing a rubric is drawn up which awards points in 3 different categories: overall design, intelligent use of space, completeness and neatness and accuracy
  • Ordering equipment/furnishings: rubric includes points for staying within budget, correctly calculating tax, shipping etc. and completeness of order
  • Ordering Supplies (much like the rubric for ordering equipment)
