Regrouping in Addition (Special Education)

Author: Anne Villeneuve
School District: Heuvelton Central School
Subject: Mathematics
Grade Range: 2 (Special Education)
Duration/Time Required:

  • Number of Days - Most students should reach mastery level in 4-5 days
  • Length of Period - 45 minutes

Standard:

  • Content: Number sense and Operations Strand- Students will understand numbers, multiple ways to represent numbers, relationships among numbers and number systems.
2N16 – Use a variety of strategies to solve addition and subtraction problems using one- and two-digit numbers with and without regrouping.
  • Process: Representation Strand-Students will create and use representations to organize, record, and communicate mathematical ideas.
    2R3-Use standard and non-standard representations.

Objectives:
Given base-ten blocks and place value mats, students will demonstrate the ability to regroup in a two-digit addition problem with 80% accuracy.
Given a set of problems, students will determine when to regroup in a two-digit addition problem with 90% accuracy.
Instructional Plan:

  • Anticipatory Set - students will create two-digit numbers on their place value mats.
  • Model - the teacher will demonstrate how to add two-digit numbers, using a place value mat, on the overhead.
  • Guided - the teacher will instruct the students to make a two-digit number at the top of their mats, using base ten blocks. The teacher will then instruct the students to make a two-digit number at the bottom of their mat, representing the number to be added. “Are there enough ones to make a group of tens?” Regroup these ones and exchange them for one ten. Do this one more time- or more as monitored.
  • Independent Practice - the students will complete a worksheet on addition of two-digit numbers with regrouping. (McGraw-Hill Student Edition- p. 165)
