Author: Shannon Ayrassian
School District: Madrid Waddington Elementary School
Subject: Basic Facts
Grade Range: 3-4
Duration/Time Required:

  • Number of days: 1
  • Length of period: 45 minutes

Standard:

  • Content - Number Sense and Operations
  • Process - Problem Solving, Communication, Representations

Objective: To have the students practice basic fact

Instructional Plan:

  1. Each player rolls one die once. The player who rolls the highest number goes first. If there is a tie, the players who rolled the same number should re-roll.
  2. The first player rolls both dice.
  3. Decide which operation you would like to use on the two numbers you rolled: addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division.
  4. Write the answer to your number sentence on the clock in the appropriate spot. Underneath, or next to the number, write the number sentence that you used. For example, if you rolled a 6 and a 2, you could write: a 12 on the clock and then 6×2, or an 8 on the clock and then 6+2, or a 3 on the clock and then 6/2, or a 4 on the clock and write 6-2. Its up to you which operation you use to try to fill in your clock. You do not have to use the same operation each time.
  5. Player one continues to roll and fill in his/her clock until he/she is unable to write a number of the face of the pirates watch.
  6. Now it is player twos turn (repeat steps 2-5).
  7. Continue moving from player to player. If you cannot fill in aspot on your clock after you roll, the turn moves to the next player until one person has their whole clock filled in. That person is the winner!

Assessment: Once a student’s clock is filled, the teacher should verify that all number sentences match the product, sum, quotient, or difference on the clock.
