Author: Trudy Stacy
School District: Governeur
Subject: Mathematics
Grade Range: 5 - 6
Duration/Time Required:

  • Number of days: 1 (10-15 minute AM Bell Ringer)
  • Length of period: 60 minutes

Standard:

  • Content - Geometry
  • Process - Connections, Reasoning & Proof

Objective: Students will find and draw the line(s) of symmetry of a shape.

Instructional Plan:
At Bell Ringer have students look at shapes that have lines of symmetry already drawn on them (R10-12). Students will then draw line(s) of symmetry on the four given shapes. As a whole group, they will write definitions for line of symmetry. Discuss definitions, and agree upon one definition to have students put in their notebooks.
Guided Practice - Worksheet P10-12 (top half) to be done independently then checked with a partner. A transparency will be available which will then be used to go over top of the paper with the whole class. Students will then complete the bottom part on theirown. At completion, two different students will complete the last two examples on the board.
Independent Practice - Christmas Card activity: Students will draw half of a symmetrical Christmas card based in the half they are given. Completed projects will be displayed.

Assessment:
Completed Christmas figure(drawn across line of symmetry)
