Integrated Math and Physics - The Roller Coaster Camp

August 3 - 8, 2009
Instructors: Dr. Peter Turner, Dr. Katie Fowler, Dr. Dave Wick & Dr. Mike Ramsdell
The primary content of the 5-day institute will be projects and problem-based learning which combine mathematics, physics, and computation content. The institute will be held concurrent with the IMPETUS Roller Coaster Camp in order to help teachers see how the various topics can be incorporated into student learning at grade levels from 7 through 12. Topics will be adaptable to multiple grade levels and subject areas.
The initial choice of topics would be drawn from the (NYSED STEP funded) IMPETUS Roller Coaster project. Further applications in other applied topics that will help motivate student work in mathematics, science (especially physics) and technology will be developed for 2009 and beyond. Topics will include physics experiments utilizing data collection equipment such as sensors, mathematical modeling of scientific phenomena, and analysis of data using computer technology as well as “paper and pencil” math techniques. Activities will include physics and mathematics labs, and computer software sessions.
