Junior Legos for the Classroom
August 4-8, 2008

Instructors: Charlie French, Patrick Farrand, and Ellen Glasgow, SLL BOCES
Want a cool way to engage elementary students in Science, Technology, and Math?
How about using Legos to introduce simple machine concepts? Three classroom teachers will be presenting this workshop for elementary teachers of grades 1-3 and 4&5. Using Lego education products teachers will build simple machines such as levers, pulleys, gears, and wheels and axles. Lessons will be adapted and created to meet individual classroom needs. Teachers who participate will have access to classroom kits that will allow full participation of up to 24 students, loaned to them to use during the school year. Lego products for grades 4&5 will include working with motors and will incorporate CD animations. This is a great bridge between the grades 1-3 Lego activities and the grades 4-6 First Lego League (FLL). These kits enable students to explore scientific inquiry, physical science, technology, teamwork, problem-solving skills, and creativity in a fun engaging way.
Lego kits include:
- Photographs of real-world pulleys, gears, levers, and wheel and axle devices
- Background information for each subject
- Suggested problem solutions
- Assessment ideas
- Lesson plans and worksheets
